On a high-risk day

  • On Extreme or Catastrophic days, or during a total fire ban, reconsider going into the bush.
  • Never light any fire on a total fire ban day. Angle grinders and some tools are also restricted.
  • Carry plenty of water, tell someone your plans, and know at least two ways out.
  • Keep a way to receive warnings (state fire app, ABC local radio, or the Emergency+ app).

Fire danger ratings, state by state

Australia uses the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS): No rating, Moderate, High, Extreme and Catastrophic. Ratings and total fire bans are declared by each state fire service and are the official source you must follow.
