History
Moonstone Hill is a general permission area named for its deposits of feldspar moonstone. The area lies in the volcanic Lava Plains country west of the Great Dividing Range, where ancient volcanic activity has produced a range of gemstones and minerals.
What You Can Find
Feldspar moonstone is the main attraction, with pieces showing the characteristic blue-white sheen (adularescence) that makes moonstone prized by gem collectors.
Loose pieces can be found on the surface and in shallow digging.
Getting There
Remote location. Access via unsealed roads from the Kennedy Highway. A 4WD is essential.
The area is best accessed from Mount Garnet or Greenvale.
Camping
Bush camping only. No facilities. Carry all water and supplies.
