History
Mount Gibson near Innot Hot Springs is well known as a collecting locality for gem topaz. The area sits on the western edge of the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland, where topaz, quartz, and cassiterite are found in weathered granite country.
What You Can Find
Topaz crystals showing good forms and clarity are the main find. Topaz is usually colourless, but rare golden and blue colours have also been found.
Quartz crystals and cassiterite (tin oxide) are also found in the weathered granite country.
Getting There
From Mareeba, head south-west towards Dimbulah. Mount Gibson is accessible via local roads from the Dimbulah area.
Some access tracks may require a high-clearance vehicle.
Camping
Limited facilities. Accommodation available in Mareeba or Dimbulah.
