History
Mount Morgan is one of Australia's most famous mining towns. The Mount Morgan mine, which operated from 1882 to 1981, produced over 225 tonnes of gold and 387,000 tonnes of copper, making it one of the richest gold mines in Australian history.
The general permission area at Dam No.7 Reserve allows fossickers to search for gold and copper minerals in the tailings and surrounding country near the historic mine.
What You Can Find
Fine gold and copper minerals (malachite, azurite, chrysocolla) can be found in the old tailings and surrounding ground.
The area is more about the history and collecting mineral specimens than finding significant gold.
Getting There
Mount Morgan is 38 km south-west of Rockhampton via the Burnett Highway.
The Dam No.7 Reserve is located east of the township.
Camping
No camping at the reserve. Accommodation available in Mount Morgan.
