History

O'Briens Creek is one of Australia's premier topaz localities. The area produces gem-quality topaz crystals from weathered granite country, ranging from colourless to pale blue and occasionally champagne.

The fossicking area has been popular since the 1960s and continues to produce fine specimens. Some topaz crystals from O'Briens Creek have been faceted into gems of exceptional clarity.

What You Can Find

Gem-quality topaz crystals are the primary find. Colours range from colourless to pale blue to champagne.

Quartz crystals (including smoky quartz) and occasional aquamarine are also found in the granite country.

Topaz is found by breaking apart weathered granite and searching in the decomposed rock and soil.
