History
Swiper's Gully is a general permission area in the Granite Belt near Stanthorpe, known for its topaz deposits. The Granite Belt is famous for its wine production, but the granite country also yields gem minerals.
The area has been a popular topaz collecting locality for decades, producing crystals in the decomposed granite.
What You Can Find
Topaz crystals, usually colourless to pale blue, are found in decomposed granite.
Quartz crystals (including smoky quartz) are also common in the area.
Getting There
From Stanthorpe, head west. The locality is signposted.
Stanthorpe is approximately 220 km south-west of Brisbane via the New England Highway.
