History
Thanes Creek is a fossicking area west of Warwick on the Darling Downs. The creek has produced alluvial gold and occasional sapphires from its gravels.
The area has been fossicked since the late 1800s and remains popular with weekend prospectors from the Darling Downs and Brisbane regions.
What You Can Find
Alluvial gold is found in the gullies and creeks, derived from primary gold-bearing quartz reefs in the area.
Panning alluvial sediments within the stream channel and from gravel layers is the main method.
Getting There
From Warwick, head west towards Pratten. Thanes Creek is signposted.
Warwick is approximately 160 km south-west of Brisbane via the Cunningham Highway.

Limited facilities. Accommodation available in Warwick.
