Boundary data from Queensland Government spatial services
History
The Willows is a large designated fossicking land area south of the main gemfields. It covers a wide expanse of open country and is popular with experienced fossickers who prefer to work away from the more crowded areas around Sapphire and Rubyvale.
The area has a long history of sapphire production, with alluvial gems found in the wash gravels across the field.
What You Can Find
Sapphires and zircon are found in the alluvial wash gravels.
The area is less heavily worked than Sapphire and Rubyvale, so finds are still possible with patience.
Getting There
Access is via unsealed roads south from the main gemfields area. A 4WD or high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rain.
Camping
Bush camping may be available in the surrounding area. Check current conditions and restrictions.
Facilities are limited. Carry your own water and supplies.
Important Notes
- !A Queensland fossicking licence is required.
- !The Willows is more remote than the main gemfield towns. Be prepared for limited mobile reception.
