History
Yowah is one of the most famous opal localities in Queensland, known worldwide for the unique "Yowah nut" - small ironstone concretions with a kernel of precious opal inside. The field has been worked since the 1880s.
The Yowah Opal Festival, held annually in July, draws opal enthusiasts from around the world. The tiny community of Yowah revolves entirely around opal.
What You Can Find
Yowah nuts are the signature find - small ironstone nodules that, when cracked open, may contain a centre of precious opal. Not every nut contains gem opal, which is what makes cracking them so exciting.
Boulder opal is also found in the surrounding country, similar to other fields in the Queensland opal belt.
Getting There
From Cunnamulla, head west on the Mitchell Highway then turn off north towards Yowah, approximately 100 km.
The road is generally accessible in dry conditions, but can be closed after rain. Check conditions before travelling.
Camping
The Yowah Opal Centre has camping facilities.
Bush camping is also available at some fossicking areas.
