History

Gold was found on Bendigo Creek in 1851, and Bendigo became one of the richest goldfields in the world, first for its alluvial gold and then for its deep quartz reefs. The Central Deborah, the last of the big mines, closed in 1954.

Where to look

The regional park and the national park's designated areas take in old alluvial ground and reef workings around the city. Bendigo has 1 m LiDAR on the Dig Here map, which shows the old diggings under the trees.

Getting there

Parts of the parks sit on the edge of Bendigo, at Kangaroo Flat, Eaglehawk and Huntly, and in the Whipstick north of the city.

Camping

Check with Parks Victoria (13 1963). There are campgrounds in the Whipstick section.
